Is This Site for You?

This web site is dedicated to the women and men who operate the world's 200+ legal state operated lotteries. We have spent a career researching, writing and reporting on the global lottery industry.

There is little information that the average lottery player would find of value. The statistics we collect are by and large countable numbers audited by professionals collected and published by us. We primarily track information on lottery sales, prizes and net profit to government, advertising budgets and game design--both for TLF Publications' annual books (such as La Fleur's World Lottery Almanac) and our monthly magazine (La Fleur's Magazine).

Mobile Apps are Better with ‘M®: “M&M’s® Brand Chocolate Factory” is Colorful Fun!

(December 10, 2012) – Gamers and chocolate lovers alike will have colorful fun inside the “M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Factory,” a new gaming app launching this month on iTunes for $.99.   Users help the adventurous M&M’S® Characters save M&M’S® Brand Candies from melting by utilizing different tools to divert the lentils from falling into hot milk chocolate. This engaging app was developed by Mars Retail Licensee Alchemy3 and is the first of its kind developed for the M&M’S brand.

The app “M&M’S® Brand Chocolate Factory” gives consumers an exciting, new way to connect with their favorite M&M’S® Characters.  In the past, Mars Retail has offered a variety of family games that incorporate the M&M’S® Brand, from puzzles to checkers and YAHTZEE, so creating a gaming app was the next step forward. Consumers of all ages have been looking for an M&M’S® Brand app, and it is expected it will be a big hit.

In the game, the six M&M’S® Characters plead for help to save M&M’S® Brand Candies from melting inside the factory. Using a set of six tools that includes rubber bands, conveyer belts, pinwheels and pipes, the user creates a system to catch and direct the bouncing M&M’S® Brand Candies around obstacles.  Every candy that is safely directed into the bag becomes a point-scoring pinball as it bounces through the Pachinko pins to rack up points. Each session ends with a final score resembling a plant inspection report.

Before, during and after the game, the M&M’S® Characters offer tips and comments inside talk bubbles. With a nod to safety, M&M’S® Character Blue -- wearing a construction hard hat – warns, “Remember not to play while operating heavy machinery, driving or flying,” while pointing to a yellow caution sign with drawings of a plane, train and automobile.

Features of the app include Pachinko style scoring, 12 different levels, 34 achievements, Twitter messaging, Facebook Posts and a game center leaderboard. There’s even a “gifting button” on iTunes (in the app under the options settings), so it can be a unique, virtual gift providing hours of entertainment.
The game will be available on iOS, and users can download the app from iTunes.

Quantitative Tennessee Lottery Holographic Test Shows 79% Sales Increase

Holyoke, MA – December 5, 2012 – The Hazen Paper Co. has announced that the results of a quantitative test conducted in conjunction with Scientific Games Inc. and the Tennessee Lottery have been received.

The Tennessee Lottery recently conducted a controlled quantitative test that was run to compare the sales of one of its core $5 games ($100,000 Jackpot) which had been traditionally produced on conventional board stock with the sales of a holographic version of the same game that utilized an identical ticket value, prize structure and payout percentage. The only significant variable in this comparison was the use of holography.

Sales results were compared by contrasting sixteen weeks of the conventional game’s sales with sixteen weeks of sales of the holographic version of this game. The holographic version was transitioned into the marketplace immediately following the depletion of the conventional version of this game. The results of this comparative test showed that during its initial 16 weeks of sales, the holographic version of this game achieved an index of 179 when compared to its conventional counterpart.

The incremental cost of the holographic board for the tickets sold during this initial 16 week period was fully absorbed when less than a 6% increase in sales (vs. the conventional game) was attained.

The financial impact of the 79% increase in sales that was observed during this 16 week period for the 845,980 holographic tickets that were sold during this timeframe resulted in incremental profitability for the TN lottery of $723,000.

This increase in profitability can be directly equated to the opportunity benefit resulting from the reduced amount of time required to sell through the holographic tickets vs. the increased amount of time that would have been required to sell a comparable quantity of conventional tickets.

No evidence of cannibalism was observed with the other $5 games being sold by the TN Lottery (or for that matter, with any other instant games of any value being sold by the TN lottery) during this 16 week test period.

It should also be noted that upon the depletion of the holographic game tickets (27 weeks), sales of the holographic version of this game exceeded sales of the plain board version for the same time frame by $1.6 million.

The following link illustrates the Tennessee game that was used as well as the test results: www.holographyx.com/TN

The meeting brought key retailers from the Fort Wayne market together with Hoosier Lottery management to discuss the current business climate for Lottery retailers and how the Lottery can better serve retailer business needs in the area.

Hoosier Lottery officials also presented to retailers the key pillars of its future business plan, which will responsibly generate more than $200 million in new retailer commissions during the first five years of the plan.

"Hoosier Lottery retailers are the backbone of our success," said Connie Laverty O'Connor, CEO of GTECH Indiana, working on behalf of the State Lottery Commission of Indiana. Chicago Worker Helping Out with Superstorm Sandy Recovery Wins Big with the New Jersey Lottery

TRENTON– (Nov. 9, 2012) – John Turner, a water mitigation and restoration technician for National Catastrophe Solutions of Chicago, traveled to the East Coast on Oct. 30 to help in the cleanup from Superstorm Sandy. After working on water damaged areas in New York City, he and his co-workers headed to the New Jersey towns of Point Pleasant, Toms River and Bay Head on Nov. 1.

To unwind after their long days of water extraction, drywall and debris removal services, he and his associates played some NJ Lottery instant games. Turner’s Nov. 4 purchase of a Championship Poker ticket proved to be a Jersey Shore souvenir that he won’t soon forget – it gave him a $100,000 win.

“I showed the card to my buddies, and we all couldn’t believe it. We started asking the people around us in the pizzeria, and they all said it was a winner,” Turner said. “I was overjoyed and had tears in my eyes. I’m still just trying to take it all in.” He plans to use the winnings to pay off some bills and perhaps buy an investment property around Chicago. John’s lucky retailer was Plaza Convenience & Deli, 2459 Highway 33, Neptune.

Turner, who is 38, is no stranger to New Jersey. He was born in Newark and at the age of 4, he and his mother moved south to Atlanta. In recent years, his business has brought him back to New Jersey many times to help out with post-storm cleanups, including those from Hurricane Irene and various Nor’easters.
“New Jersey is an exciting place to live, work and visit,” says Carole Hedinger, Executive Director of the Lottery. “We are very grateful that John has given his time and skills to help the people dealing with the challenges brought on by Sandy and that New Jersey is giving a memorable thank you back to him.”
The NJ Lottery has a wide assortment of entertaining instant games ranging in price from $1 up to $10 with top prizes of up to $1 million. Players won nearly $945 million playing NJ Lottery instant games in fiscal year 2012 alone.

The NJ Lottery also gives players a second chance to win on their non-winning instant game tickets with the Million Dollar Replay program. There are 15 top prizes ranging in value from $10,000 up to the $1 million grand prize. Throughout the year, four semifinalist drawings are held where 100 entrants are chosen as finalists in the grand prize drawing. Visit the NJ Lottery website to register for our VIP Club and instructions on how to enter the Million Dollar Replay program.
