The 12th Annual La Fleur’s Best Instant Games of the Year Survey takes an annual snapshot of what is in vogue in marketing instant tickets. The comprehensive study covers instant lottery practices in Australasia, Canada, Europe and the United States. Among the instant marketing strategies studied are the number of instant games launched per year, the number of instant game launches by price point, the average prize payout by price point and category-wise, the number of $1 and non-$1 instant games sold concurrently and the game introduction rate. The U.S. lotteries responding to this survey sold a total of 2,048 instant games in fiscal 2005, including 656 $1 games, 672 $2 games, 182 $3 games, 351 $5 games, 18 $7 games, 139 $10 games, and 30 $20 games. The average U.S. lottery sold 54 instant games in fiscal 2005, of which 17 (or 32%) were $1 tickets and 36 (or 68%) were non-$1 tickets. The Australasian lotteries (including Lotteries Commission of New Zealand) sold a total of 221 instant games in fiscal 2005, including 54 $1 games, 51 $2 games, 44 $3 games, 32 $4 games, 24 $5 games, five $6 games and seven $10 games. The average Australasian lottery sold 37 instant games in fiscal 2005, of which 9 (or 24%) were $1 tickets and 28 (or 76%) were non-$1 tickets. The Canadian lotteries sold a total of 306 instant games in fiscal 2005, including 82 $1 games, 89 $2 games, 75 $3 games, 18 $4 games, 24 $5 games, six $7 games, 10 $10 games and two $20 games. The average Canadian lottery sold 61 instant games in fiscal 2005, of which 16 (or 26%) were $1 tickets and 45 (or 74%) were non-$1 tickets. Average PC Weekly Sales Each lottery organization was surveyed on its top three $1 and non-$1 instant games in order to provide lottery marketers with an understanding of how the jurisdiction’s best three instant games performed in relation to each other. The success of a game is measured by its average weekly per capita sales for the first 12 weeks of the ticket’s launch. In addition, lotteries were also polled on their top non-holiday $2, $3, $5, $10 and $20 ticket as measured by average weekly per capita sales for the first 12 weeks of the ticket’s launch. The list specifically excludes holiday tickets since these products routinely are best sellers for most lotteries. Also by examining the best seller by price point in each category, it is easier to see the relationship between the different price points. For example, in the $3 category, extended play tickets and licensed theme games predominated. The $10 category boasted “elite” titles such as Fortune, Mega and Blockbuster. U.S. lotteries routinely limit the top prize for $1 tickets to small amounts between $250 and $5,000 although a number of theme ticket (like Wild 8’s or 9s in the Line) will offer a like denomination prize (such as $888 or $999). In terms of prize payouts, the majority of U.S. lotteries increase the prize payout as the price of a ticket increases. Survey results reconfirmed gamblers’ connection with lucky numbers. Instant lotteries based on single digit numbers are a favorite, regardless of demographics or geographic location. In fiscal 2005, games like Quick 7’s, Wild 8’s and 9’s Are Fine were the hottest number combinations. But themes based on the digit seven are the most commonplaces, with nine U.S. lotteries reporting such a 7’s games among their top three selling $1 instant games. Games offering a minimal $25 or $50 top prizes, such as Hit $25 or Fast $50, are also hot with lottery players. Whimsical theme games also lure players, such as Love Notes, A Wreath of Franklins and Ka Ching. Card game and gaming themes continue to be top sellers as evidenced by the popularity of Jacks In A Box, Bonus Blackjack and the perennial favorite Aces High. Once again, 7-11-21 ranked as a top three $1 game in four jurisdictions.
